RYA Powerboat Courses - 2007

CLYC is approved to run all of the RYA Powerboat courses

RYA POWERBOAT LEVEL 2
This is a two day course which covers launching and recovery along with skills and manoeuvres such as mooring, anchoring, man overboard drill, an introduction to navigation, pilotage, basic GPS skills and engine checks. The maximum instructor to student ratio is 1:3 and the minimum age is 12.

SAFETY BOAT COURSE
This two day course deals with the specifics of providing support and safety cover for sailing, windsurfing and canoeing. It is being revised this year to cover the difficulties of higher performance dinghies, and guidance on dealing with kite-surfers. The maximum instructor to student ratio is 1:6Minimum age is 16 and you must have Level 2.

INTERMEDIATE POWERBOAT DAY CRUISING COURSE
This is a two day course designed to bridge the gap between level 2 and Advanced. This will cover coastal powerboating by day, use of GPS, traditional chart work in high-speed navigation and pilotage, the role of the skipper, and planning and making a passage. The maximum instructor to student ratio is 1:6. Minimum age is 16 and you must have Level 2.

ADVANCED POWERBOAT NIGHT AND DAY COURSE
The aim of this two day course, plus night exercise, is to teach boat handling, seamanship, pilotage and navigation in a planing powerboat by day and night in tidal coastal waters using both traditional charts and electronic navigation. Search patterns, rough weather handling, night navigation, emergency procedures, helicopter rescue and safety equipment are some of the topics included.

Candidates should be competent to the standard of the Intermediate Powerboat Certificate with a thorough knowledge of navigation and chart work to the level of the DaySkipperShore based Certificate. A sound knowledge of GPS and Chartplotter systems is also useful. A First Aid qualification and VHF radio licence are also required. The maximum instructor to student ratio is 1:6. Minimum age is 17.

These courses are run on a demand basis only and are available all year round
